Crappiest Job

Finally, I realized how lame it is to post a blog entry on two different sites so I posted a blog in Multiply (http://www.claudine813.multiply.com/) today saying that from this day on, all my blogs would ONLY be posted here.

Yesterday, I visited a previous officemate's page in Facebook and saw his shoutout about his essay that he posted @ www.jessicarulestheuniverse.com which earned him the award for his "perseverance in the face of Orwellian absurdity" with the question, "What was the crappiest job you ever had?" We used to work together in PeopleSupport and I was able to convince him to try his luck at Global Response. Even before I read the essay, I commented:

Claudine Santillan
my crappiest job would have been GR hahahaha not the job itself, definitely not the people but the boss.. THE BOOOOSSSSS!!! hahahaha
Yesterday at 6:47am

See, I already knew he'd say GR. Why? Read the essay below. Ryan is such a gifted writer that though our experience with GR is worth a week of chat over coffee, he was somehow able to fit a summary of our life with the company in a short essay. If this is not enough, you may want to read on my previous posts. FYI, I'm the officemate who called our managers "rookies" LOL!

# 6 Rye Says: July 17th, 2009 at 9:32 am
It really depends on what one sees as crappy. I had this really memorable job which paid big but with a catch: our boss was a little on a “odd” side.

When I started, everything seemed smooth. We were made to meet our American boss (let’s call him Mr. X). We were warned about Mr. X before, about how “odd” he was, but the first meeting went well nonetheless. He gave this speech about how we were supposed to love our jobs, how we’re supposed to work hard, because it was all going to pay off when each of us had laptops and cars and big houses. Then I was introduced to him: name, position, and sexual orientation (What’s up with people introducing you to others and indicating your sexual preference? “Hey, I’d like to introduce you to my friend. He’s gay.” Why can’t they just add your interests, like in those personal ads? “Hey, this is my friend. He’s into reading, travelling, and removing benign cysts.”). After the introductions, Mr. X told me he’s OK with gays, that he has no problem with them. (Umm… do you have to say that if you’re really OK with gays? The way he said it was equivalent to this: “Hi, Morgan Freeman, I would like you to know that I’m OK with negroes.”)

A couple of months later, I found out what made our company different from other companies. We had eviction nights. I found that out when our boss asked us to write down on a piece of paper what we loved about the company, what we didn’t love about it, what we liked about our work, and what we didn’t. He said we should be honest because he wouldn’t mind. While writing down my honest answers, a co-worker who’d been there a few months earlier told me we were having another eviction night. The next night, our boss met with us to have our answers read aloud, and to point out by yelling that we were wrong with our honest answers. A co-worker who wrote that she thought the managers were rookies was yelled at because she had an attitude problem. I was yelled at because I wrote that I didn’t like the politics and the mind games. He told me that I should resign. I didn’t.

Weeks later was another eviction night. We were divided into three groups: the first group being good (I was lucky enough to be in this group), the second group on the fence, and the last group the ones being evicted. Actually, they were asked to opt for a pay cut or get evicted. Half of them chose to get evicted (with severance pay), and others chose the pay cut, intent on proving themselves worthy of being in the company. They never did prove themselves. Weeks later, they belonged to the same group and ended up shedding tears. This should be longer. But since you said we should keep our essays brief, I’ll end this here with a couple of paragraphs more.

One time, a girl was asked to leave when she reported for work with her hair wet. Apparently, you haven’t meditated enough yet to consider yourself ready to get right down to work when you’ve just had a shower. We’d also be asked to leave if we didn’t have a schedule of all the things we were going to do for the day (9:30PM-meditate; 10:00PM-call whatsisname, bring up the contract; 10:13PM-role-play with colleagues in order to close a deal!).

Another time, we were interrupted from work because in 12 minutes, we had to send our boss a YM message explaining why we loved the job, and how serious we were in succeeding in life.

I started there with 30 or so people. When I finally resigned, there were 8-10 of us left. Why did I resign? Well, we were bonding with our boss one morning and he was making jokes. It was past work hours already. It was a fun meeting; he wasn’t in a bad mood. He said something and I joked back, asking him to buy me a butt-plug. It was funny (but you had to be there). The more conservative people aired out their yuuuccckkks, paired with laughter. My boss also laughed. The next day, after work, he sat us down for another meeting. He pointed at me and told me I was singing for an hour during work. Apparently, one cannot do a good job if he/she is singing along to songs on the radio. I told him I couldn’t have been singing for an hour; that’s just impossible! That’s like singing along to two albums with bonus tracks! And then he said, “I’m a multi-fucking-millionaire and you ask me to buy you a butt-plug?!”

In my head, I said, “Oh Em Gee! Why is he bringing that up? That was yesterday’s tea! It’s now cold and uninteresting!” Then he talked to me one-on-one and offered me a pay cut or a severance pay. I chose to stay that day. But the next night, after much thinking, I told him I was leaving. We fist-bumped and I never saw him again. About two days later, I learned that the deal I was working on got closed. That should have been a slap in his face because I managed to close a deal while singing along to songs on the radio! A week later, I heard the company was dissolved. I didn’t get my commission. And none of us was able to buy laptops, cars, and big houses. But what’s crappier is that we held this Big Brother kind of job, with eviction nights and all, but none of us gained celebrity out of it.

Anxiety Attack

It's 03:30am. At 6am I'll have the manager's certification which our company calls TIER/IETR. T for Teach, I for Interact, E for Evaluate and R for Review. I'm confident I can do it but I still have a few things that I'm nervous about. I've heard a lot of manager's on the floor have cried because of brat and kulit trainers who'd really give you a hard time. I feel like taking a dump and I want to go to the restroom to throw up and I want to pee every 5 minutes. I think I'm halfway thru one pack of Marlboro. I've read the material at least a hundred times and I'm still nervous. Same feeling when I had my thesis defense.. when we faced our previous CEO for a meeting.. same feeling when I was waiting for the confirmation of a closed deal. Aaarrrggghhh! I can do this! Hahahahahaha!

I'm supposed to do side-by-side evaluations today but I'll wait until I'm done with my certification. I left Coach Soc to take care of the team while I deal with my cold feet. I wonder now how the team is doing with QA Clau not around, hehehehe. Modesty aside, they call me for everything. Be it an escalation, a question or they just wanted to talk while waiting for the next call. Geez, I don't like this feeling. I wish I can pull the time so I can get this over and done with.

Tomorrow would be a day of celebration. Pau and Gen's birthday celebration and hopefully my certification.. I still have to drop by the place I heard have rooms for rent before I go to Ayala to buy my contribution to the party. I know we'll have a blast later. Earlier, me and my agents met up for some eating and shopping at SM and I brought along Ryan's sister 'coz I know she's bored as hell at their house while waiting for her papers to be processed so she can fulfill her dream of working abroad as a nurse. Too bad Ryan came too early so I had to leave them. Guys, wait for the pix.. I forgot to upload it earlier. I wasn't even able to sleep well because of this darn certification. I gotta go. I need more cigs! Wish me luck!

--> It's now 07:30am. It's over. I was certified with good feedback.Ü Me happy!

Silver Belle..

This was supposed to be posted Sunday night --> Come wednesday, I'll be a silver belle. I can't help but wonder where I'll be 25 more years from now. My bf said I'd probably be six feet below the ground if I don't quit smoking soon.. I told him I've quit a long time ago but I still get caught once in a while (quitting is easier said than done). Someday...... someday I will. It's a lazy Sunday afternoon and I haven't slept since I came home from work at 12 noon. I found Ryan sleeping in my bed and it felt good, hehehehe. A few hours after, he successfully tried to stop me from giving the waitress from Shakey's a tongue-lashing. Apparently, preparing their grand slam pizza takes more than 25 minutes. Now here I am sitting in front of the laptop with an 18 inch italian sausage pizza and a glass of ice-cold coke, secretly hoping he's serious about a bad stomach so I can have a much needed cigarette break.

I wasn't able to finish the entry. I was too sleepy to chew and swallow my pizza much more to think about what to blog. Last night was his sister's birthday. Lyn2x and I went one-on-one with Emperador and after about 3 hours, we both sang our way to the room. Now, I still don't know what to blog about. I just wanted to say, F*CK YOU BIG BROTHER! I TERRIBLY MISS P.P.I. (party people international for those who are curious) AND IF IT WASN'T FOR YOUR SICK AND PUNY MIND, I'D BE HAPPIER! I MISS YOU DODONG FAITH AND RYAN AND GWEN AND THEA AND GENIE AND SERGS (even if I know you're still mad at me because of somebody who I mistakenly trusted) AND VAN AND PEARL AND MARK AND GLENN AND DICKIE.. EVERYBODY! EVEN THE LITTLE GIRL IN ZERAUS!!! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Anyway......... Hey, have you seen this video? I think it's cute. Me like it! And have you seen the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony. Amazing fireworks!!! That's all! hehehehe.

I Miss You, PPI!!!

A few more days and it'll be a month of bumming around. I don't mind except that I'm close to being really broke! LOL! Me and my former officemates met up for a night of talking and drinking last Saturday. Funny to know that 6 out of 7 are jobless. But everybody was happy. Not totally but at least we laughed our worries away. Our professional relationship was short-lived but we bonded like no other team has. I never really talked about the experience, but now I'm open.

Our previous company was very unconventional. We go thru each day thinking tomorrow we won't have any company to go back to.. Like each day was our last. It was like being The Apprentice / Housemates of Big Brother. Each week, we were given tasks/challenges to test how serious we were with the job and to know how dedicated we were. Even before we started working, we were already given a test. We were asked if we were willing to relocate to Bacolod [back to Bacolod, I mean] and despite everything that worries me about coming home, I said yes and so as the others. I slowly said goodbye to my friends here in Cebu and my family was happy that I was coming back. Next morning, I got a text message saying I passed the test and those who said they weren't willing to relocate were subtly fired. There were nights that we had to leave work and travel all the way from Gorordo to Talamban only to be welcomed with vodka, tequilla, beer and chips. If you think it was all fun, you're wrong. Those who were too drunk and got crazy were let go. One wrong move and you're out. We get "fuck you!" and "you're stupid!" at times but it was on to the left ear and off to the right. Someone once said it was all MIND GAMES and we couldn't agree more. I could go on with all the insane tests we got thru. How we survived countless eviction days/nights but you might just think I'm making it up.

We believed in each other. We laughed and cried together. We planned our future together. We comforted each other. Gained weight together, LOL! Sang Last Night, I Love You Brother and Will You Count Me In together.. Yes, it was short-lived but I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. I'm not angry, maybe a li'l.. and I'm not blogging about this because I want to make a point. I'm talking about this because I miss the team.. A LOT! PPI [Party People International.. or President's Plan Incorporated] will always have a place in my heart.. Awwwwww..

Alone.. Again!

All alone in the office again.. Sometimes I wonder.. why I'm so punctual? It just don't feel right if others are waiting for me. Even if you ask my childhood friends [Joedel, yes YOU!], they'd tell you I always arrive first in any meet-ups. Even if it means I have to wait for hours [Joedel, I am talking to you!].

Well good thing though 'coz I got the chance to snaps some pics of our new office set-up. HERE is the link along with the pictures taken last Saturday night. Some GR peeps went on party to celebrate a little something-something. Well, it's not really little. It's a BIG thing and sorry to tell you, only us can understand why, hehehehe..Ü Oh, and it was Ryan's birthday. I finally got to see this much talked about Numero Doce bar. Too bad though we came half an hour before closing time. But we still saw some action. Regulars would know what I mean.Ü

I'm not really in the mood for blogging. So bye for now..

AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!

AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!! It's an answered prayer.. a wish granted. Just what I needed to make me want for more! I never really understood what it feels like until today. I promised ten cartwheels but the sound of the gong was enough. Van, FINALLY! Insik, THANK YOU! And thanks too to the rest of the GR peeps for cheering with us! Lemme do it again, AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!

Is it? In a mini-bar? Nah. But it's a pretty good start for this weekend. Exactly a month ago, I got into an agreement with my BF that I'll quit smoking a month after. So... can I do it? I dunno, bro! I hope I can. But this "training" will probably take longer than the planned "few hours" and beer isn't beer without cigarettes. For me, at least. We talked Jan. 02 at 9pm so technically, I still have 12 hours before I have to quit. Holy crap! Anyway, HAPPY WEEKEND EVERYONE!

Different Faces

I thought of creating a poster of GR peeps candid shots while waiting for a client callback and I'm very pleased with the outcome. My officemates loved it too. Why not? It's fun to see our faces when we're not aware that there's a cam.

I Dunno, Bro!

The last few days had been crazy. Wait, that's an understatement. I thought what happened yesterday was the worst, but nothing compares to the news we received earlier today. For those who have heard us talk about our company, you should have an idea. It's eating me up inside. At this point, I can't openly talk about it as the issue has not been totally put to rest. I wish I didn't have to feel this bad. Six months into this company and I have completely fallen in-love with it.. with the opportunity to work with amazing people and it sucks to think about what's gonna happen in the next few days. Aaarrrggghhh! The only consolation that I have is the determination of the people who are still here and are willing to work things out. If you're thinking about moving to a start-up company, think again. I never thought it would be this tough. Sigh. I swore.. no, I promised the team I'll stop blogging while I'm in the office but I feel that this is the only way that I can somehow ease my anxiety. Ikadlaw ang libog as Ilonggos would always say when faced with a problem. It means laugh your worries away. And I have Ryan, the perverted step-son of Satan (who's now sitting next to me) to take care of that as he always has something to say about anything - read: bastos. Bahala na si Batman. We repeatedly asked ourselves earlier "what now?" and we can only say the company's generic answer "I dunno bro".. As I look around the office though, I can't help but smile with the thought that I'm surrounded by people that are all but quitters. But I'm just wondering, if winners never quit and quitters never win.. who the hell said quit while you're ahead?

On the lighter side, American Idol Season 7 has kicked off and the auditions are still very entertaining, especially the one in Dallas, TX. Here's my bet so far.

Kady Malloy

And here are those that made me roll on my bed laughing..

Tammy Tuzinski

Douglas Davidson

And definitely not the least.. (is he Filipino?)

Renaldo Lapuz

Glogster

Gwenk found something really nice yesterday. I wouldn't be surprised if soon, people will go gaga over Glogster. Whoever thought of this was a genius! Here's a couple of samples. I've somehow found a way to post it here without taking up the whole page.

I Take It Back

Okay, I was so emotional yesterday but I'm over it and I take back whatever I said. That someone did something that made me re-think and I'm glad I didn't do anything really drastic otherwise, I'd be home alone wallowing in regret. It's true what other people say that decisions often end up wrong when you do it while you're mad and I'm just glad I came to my senses. Anyway, the last two days were spent at our CEO's house in Silver Hills for training/planning/strategizing of goals for 2008. I'll be busy the whole day today, I came by the office to copy all my files to my V-Phone so I can still work while I'm in Bacolod. I'll be shopping for my manita, props and prizes for our games at around 10am with Ryan [the officemate] and Faith. I'll be leaving in awhile to pack my things and get a few hours of sleep. The party kicks off at around 5pm. Gwenk and I will be leaving at around 2:30am. I can't wait to see my family. I spoke with my younger brother the other day and I was surprised to know he's already 5'6 and he's only 15! Plus I'll see my crazy 3-year old cousin Cybill. I'm sure my cam and phone will be loaded with pictures and videos of her antics. I gotta go, some people are already practicing for their presentation tomorrow and I wanna take some snaps.

All I Want For Christmas Is...

I love my job! It's 4 days 'til the party and 5 days 'til our 2-weeks Christmas/New Year vacation. We've been working our asses off to be on the go when we get back on January 2. Despite the exhaustion and pressure, we still make it a point to have our break/bonding moment. Click on the picture for more..

I Miss TRON!!!

I had blogged about my previous team TRON and how hard it was for me to leave 'em. Lately, I've been overwhelmed with the thought that a lot of 'em remember me and I've been receiving text messages inviting me to coffee or whatever. Last Saturday, Ryan [the officemate] and I was invited to TRON's Christmas Party at Zone360, a bar co-owned by a fellow Ilonggo who I worked with at PeopleSupport. The feeling of familiarity and again being with the people I had gone thru a lot with was amazing, even if it was just for a night. I've missed the fun we had. It was definitely a night I will remember for as long as I live. Pardon my being emotional. It's just that despite the fact that I'm now comfortable being at this new company and the friends I made here, three years is three years. Click on the picture for more pix. Here's a link to April, Candz and Katie's uploads.

I decided to have a body massage after the party and I wish I didn't. Twenty eight hours of no sleep, 3 shots of tequilla and a bad headache plus hard massage = sleep and snore. It was sooo embarassing! Anyway, woke up at about 9am on Sunday and spent the whole afternoon until midnight at Ryan's [the bestie] house in Lapu2x playing Tekken. Earlier today, I went to SM to do some christmas shopping with Ryan and Talia.. I wasn't able to buy anything 'coz the line at every counter was long and I don't like the idea of carrying a lot of things when I travel. I'm a lazy person in case I haven't mentioned that. I think it would be a better idea to just bring my family to SM-Bacolod [which I haven't been to since it was still unfinished last February], that way I don't have to worry that they might not like what I'm gonna get them.

Meet Global Response

Meet our company. This was created by Joe. If you're working or has worked in a call center [like most of us before this awesome job], you'll never understand why we talk about changing lives. We are still being molded to be rock stars and soon you'll hear about us and some would probably want to join our team. If you have a good track record of sales, a good head on your shoulder, exuding confidence and have a background in the staffing industry.. then we want you here.. NOW! Check out our website.

Need Glasses?

Have you ever asked yourself this, "How many among your friends wear prescription glasses?"

I have at least ten who does. I used to have one but I lost it. I used them only when I had migraine attacks back in high school. My vision is still 20-20. When I got my driver's license three years ago, the officer told me there's something wrong with my right eye and I argued telling him I covered my eye too hard when he was doing the test that's why it was blurry. He believed me.

Talia sent me this video that's why I chose this topic. I can't get over it. It's sooo funny. So you guys, take care of your eyes.. you don't want this to happen to you. Check it out! [Please click on the PLAY button again if it doesn't play the first time. There's latency in blogger video uploads. Or click HERE to be directed to my multiply video page.]

The Cebu pioneers for our company met at our CEO's house yesterday morning to plan for our Christmas Party. After a long time, I was directly involved in planning a party. I used to be the president of our village youth group, I ousted myself in the middle of my first year but my successor did a very bad job so they asked [begged] me to take over. I organized a basketball league and I would wake up in the morning with two basketball teams in uniforms waiting by our gate 'coz they can't start without me. I used to organize graduation tributes, valentines and halloween parties and the most unforgettable millenium vigil where I was able to convince all homeowners to gather in front of our house and bring food to celebrate together. The countdown to welcome year 2K was amazing! I also took care of annual fiesta preparations. From the solicitations to arranging masses, programs and bayle as we commonly know it and creating programs for adults, teens and kids. The village council asked me to run for Sandigang Kabataan [a city-wide Filipino youth organization] but my dad discouraged me as I rarely have time to spend with my friends from school [grades were never an issue]. Sigh, those were the days. Although, every year since I left Bacolod, I still get SMS from the rest of the committee who are still active asking me if I can come home and help out. It would be arrogant to say this but I was very effective that's why I always hear them say "it could have been better if you were here." Anyway, back to the Christmas Party.. We made plans of having parlor games [read: naughty] and I think it would be a fun-filled night [even if I have to leave early for Bacolod, waaaaaaah!]. It would be a pool party so it's gonna be wet and wild! You'll find out how it goes anyway. Wishful thinking: if you bookmark this site. **wink**

Nice to know..

Congratulations, CLauDinE®! Your IQ score is 122.
This number is based on a scientific formula that compares how many questions you answered correctly on the Classic IQ Test relative to others.
Your Intellectual Type is Insightful Linguist. This means you are highly intelligent and have the natural fluency of a writer and the visual and spatial strengths of an artist. Those skills contribute to your creative and expressive mind.
Descriptive Classifications of Intelligence Quotients
IQ - Description - % of Population
130+ - Very superior - 2.2%
120-129 - Superior - 6.7%
110-119 - High average - 16.1%
90-109 - Average - 50%
80-89 - Low average - 16.1%
70-79 - Borderline - 6.7%
Below 70 - Extremely low - 2.2%

I have no idea why I took the test. Nevertheless, I'm happy knowing I'm not an average like I thought I was. If you don't know your IQ yet, it wouldn't take long, here's the link. Back to work and I have to admit I miss my workstation with all it's mess and I miss the routine that I had to abandon for a week to help with local recruiting. A former officemate who I referred was extended an offer and I'm excited about working with him again as he's one of the funniest people I know. I talked to couple of gay drunkards last night and I was able to talk one of them into applying and before I left them, the other one said I talk well. I went to PS last Friday and talked to some of my former officemates and one of them said I've become sales-y which came out as a big surprise as I was one of the most vocal about how I hated the sales people while I was still with technical support. It's another story but nice to know Global Response had awaken this side of me.

Over the last couple of weeks I have watched a few movies. Resident Evil: Extinction, Rogue Assassin, even the local movie I've Fallen For You. I hated the movie and I won't even bother putting a link. Wonder why I watched it? I dunno. It was another boring Sunday and nobody was available to keep me company. It was one of those days that for the lack of anything productive to do, I allow myself to indulge in kabaduyan. I've watched quite a few baduy films because for one, I'm bored and another was I'm curious as to why people actually flock to cinemas to watch it and even allow an ambush interview. To that I say again, to each his own. Not my cup of tea but it didn't hurt either.. so it's okay. It's my BWB [don't ask me what that means] graduation this coming Saturday and I've been tiring myself thinking of what not-so-cheap but at the same time not-too-expensive gift I can give to a 25-year old guy. He wanted an original Rubik's Cube but I dunno where to get one or why out-of-the-blue he asked for it. If there's anybody out there who can help me, leave a comment with your email addy. Help, please and thanks!
